Ford Ranger 2019+ R7F701405 Instrument Cluster Repair for Professional Workshops
Hey everyone! Today on the workbench, we have a Ford Ranger instrument cluster from 2019 onwards, and it's a good reminder not to judge a dashboard by its housing. From the outside, it looks practically identical to some of the earlier Ford clusters found in the Mondeo and the older Ranger. Put it on the bench, though, and it's a different story. Those older units ran on SPC processors, while this one is built around the Renesas R7F701405.
In this article, we'll go through what's inside the Ford Ranger R7F701405 dashboard, the faults we see most often, how to get it running on the bench, and what you can do with it in FORZA 614.

What's inside the Ford Ranger R7F701405 instrument cluster
Open this cluster expecting the usual Ford layout, and the first thing you'll notice is what's missing. There's no external EEPROM on the PCB, so there's no 93C86 chip to find and no memory to desolder. The mileage and all configuration data are stored inside the RH850 microcontroller itself. That changes the whole approach: you're not reading a memory chip, you're working with the processor's internal memory.
- Microcontroller: R7F701405 (Renesas RH850) runs the cluster logic, gauge drive and CAN-bus communication, and stores mileage and configuration data in its internal memory.
- External EEPROM: none - the Ford Ranger 2019+ cluster has no separate memory chip on the board.
The display gets its own section below, because on this cluster it deserves one.

LQ042T5DZ07 Center Display

The center screen in this cluster is the LQ042T5DZ07, a 4.2-inch display.
It's the part we get asked about most often on this Ranger, and it's also where many workshops go wrong.
Here's the catch: a black screen on this cluster doesn't always mean a dead display. We've had more than a dozen customers who replaced the LQ042T5DZ07 with a brand-new unit, and the screen still stayed dark. In those cases, the fault was on the PCB, not in the panel. So before you order a new display, check the board first. It'll save you the cost of a part and an awkward phone call to your customer.
Typical faults in the Ford Ranger 2019+ dashboard
Three problems come up again and again with this cluster:
- Black display. The LQ042T5DZ07 is the obvious suspect, but as described above, the root cause is often on the PCB. Replacing the display alone doesn't always fix it.
- Excessive current draw and a flat battery. Some of these clusters pull too much current and slowly drain the vehicle's battery. The quickest way to find the culprit is to power the cluster up on the bench and look at the board through a thermal camera. The component running hotter than it should is very often the one responsible for the extra draw.
- Intermittent start and lost communication. The cluster starts one day and stays dead the next, or the vehicle loses communication with it. Here, check the wiring harness in the car first. With FORZA 614, you can light the cluster up on the bench, which tells you quickly whether the problem is in the dashboard or in the vehicle.
Full instrument cluster wake-up on the bench
The Ford Ranger R7F701405 cluster won't start on the bench from power alone.
It needs CAN-bus frames, and without them it stays dark.
FORZA 614 sends the right frames for you. Connect the cluster, click Identify, and it wakes up fully, with no separate CAN-bus generator needed. That's what lets you repair, test and program this dashboard as comfortably and safely as possible.
💡 Give it time. Our unit needs about 10 seconds to start up completely after you click Identify. If nothing happens in the first few seconds, don't assume the cluster is dead.
FORZA 614 software programming options for Ford Ranger R7F701405 dashboard
Since all the data lives inside the processor, FORZA 614 works directly with the internal memory of the R7F701405:
- Read internal memory - make a full backup before you change anything.
- Write internal memory - restore or transfer data back into the cluster.
- Mileage calibration - adjust the value up or down, for example to match a replacement cluster to the vehicle's actual mileage.
- Reset to 0 km - a clean starting point for a used cluster.
ℹ️ Read and write access: The internal memory of the R7F701405 can be read and written via OBD2 in the vehicle, or on the bench using the F1 + F2 cables. There is no external EEPROM to desolder on this cluster.
If you sell used car parts, the 0 km reset is often the best option. A cluster reset to a perfect 0 km is ready for installation, and the workshop fitting it can then set the vehicle's real mileage. It's cleaner for you and easier for your buyer.
Ford Ranger R7F701405 Dashboard Pinout

Above is the Ford Ranger R7F701405 instrument cluster pinout. You'll also find it in the FORZA 614 app, together with the connection diagram for the F1 + F2 cables. F1 is the main adapter that connects FORZA 614 to the F2 cable, which goes to the cluster's connector.
Why workshops take on Ford Ranger cluster jobs
A dealer will usually quote a new cluster plus coding, and the customer will wait for it. You can diagnose the unit on your own bench, find the real fault (display, PCB or wiring harness), and fix it for a fraction of that price. Because the cluster wakes up fully on the bench, you can also run it as a mail-in repair: customers send in the cluster, you repair and test it, and you send it back working. No car in your workshop, no extra equipment to buy, and one more cluster type your business can handle.
One subscription, no token fees
FORZA 614 runs on a single flat-rate subscription. There are no per-vehicle tokens, no individual licences and no surprise costs per job. You get a lower upfront cost than buying a traditional programmer, and your subscription funds continuous development, which is exactly how clusters like the Ford Ranger R7F701405 keep getting added. Refresh your activation and get to work.
FAQ
Does the 2019+ Ford Ranger instrument cluster have an external EEPROM?
No. The Ford Ranger cluster with the R7F701405 has no external EEPROM on the PCB. Mileage and configuration data are stored in the internal memory of the RH850 microcontroller.
Is this the same cluster as the older Ford Ranger and Mondeo units?
No. It looks practically identical from the outside, but the older clusters use SPC processors. The 2019+ Ranger cluster uses the Renesas R7F701405.
Why won't the cluster start on the bench?
It needs CAN-bus frames to start. FORZA 614 sends them when you click Identify, so no separate CAN-bus generator is needed.
How long does the cluster take to start on the bench?
About 10 seconds after clicking Identify in FORZA 614.
I replaced the LQ042T5DZ07 display and the screen is still black. Why?
On this cluster, a black screen is often caused by a fault on the PCB rather than the display itself. We've seen more than a dozen cases where a new LQ042T5DZ07 didn't fix the problem.
Can I program the Ford Ranger R7F701405 cluster via OBD2?
Yes. The internal memory can be read and written via OBD2 in the vehicle, or on the bench using the F1 + F2 cables.
