## OBD2 and Dash Plug platform for Porsche Cayenne 95640 instrument cluster programming

Hey everyone!
If your workshop repairs instrument clusters, here’s a new job for your bench.
The **Porsche Cayenne 958 95640 dashboard** is now fully supported in FORZA 614\. You can work on it in the car via OBD2, or take it out and work on it on your bench through the 32-pin dash plug. Either way, you get full read and write of the 95640 EEPROM, VIN and configuration transfer, and mileage adaptation after a cluster swap. You don’t need to desolder anything or use a separate EEPROM programmer.

This is also our first Porsche, and it opens a new group in the FORZA 614 menu. The same cluster platform is used in the **Panamera 970**, so one new position covers two models that regularly turn up at cluster repair shops.

Porsche Cayenne 95640 Dashboard Programming on the bench

Our sample has the part number **7P5.920.954.Q** and comes from a facelifted 958 built in late 2014\. Judging by the dial, it’s a diesel: the tachometer is scaled to 6,000 rpm, with the red zone starting at 5,000\. The layout is classic Porsche. There are five round instruments, with the tachometer in the middle and a PRND/M+/– gear strip. The speedometer is on the left, oil temperature and oil pressure on the far left, and coolant temperature and fuel on the far right. In the right-hand pod there’s a large colour TFT instead of a fifth gauge. On our unit that screen is completely black, which is one of the most common faults on these clusters, and we cover it below.

Below we go through what’s on the board, the faults that bring the Cayenne dashboard to your bench, and how FORZA 614 handles the 95640 in the car and on the bench.

### What’s inside the Porsche Cayenne 958 dashboard

This is a VDO/Continental unit, with manufacturer code **A2C94767300**, HW 14 and SW 7532/1701 on our sample. On the back you’ll find a built-in chime speaker, a FAKRA-style coax connector and the blue 32-pin main connector.
Inside there are two boards. The main PCB carries a shielded Renesas microcontroller, a separately shielded power supply section and a finned heatsink. A graphics daughterboard is stacked on top and drives the TFT.
One detail is worth knowing before you start probing: **the 95640 EEPROM is not on the main board**. It sits on the graphics daughterboard, next to the NOR flash.

- **Main microcontroller**: Renesas, marked **A2C87186800** \- Continental’s in-house number. It handles gauge drive, warning lamps and CAN-bus communication with the vehicle.
- **Graphics processor**: Toshiba **TX4961XBG-240** \- runs the daughterboard and renders the TFT content.
- **NOR Flash**: Spansion **S29GL064N90TFI03** \- 64 Mbit flash with the display-side firmware and graphics.
- **SDRAM**: ISSI - working memory for the graphics processor.
- **EEPROM**: **95640** \- 64 Kbit SPI serial EEPROM storing the mileage, the VIN and the cluster configuration.
- **Gauge drive**: white stepper motors under the speedometer and tachometer, with satellite boards for the outer gauges connected by grey ribbon cables.
- **Small displays**: two segment LCDs on flex ribbons under the speedometer and tachometer (one marked **A2C00050759**, dated 2014), plus a small gear indicator display in the centre of the tach.

### Porsche LCD - LB048Q01 (TD)(01) LG Display TFT Module

The colour screen in the right-hand pod is an LG Display **LB048Q01(TD)(01)**. The label carries Continental number **A2C00063791**, and **3110T-0280A** is printed on the front frame. It’s a 4.8-inch square-format colour TFT in its own metal frame. It plugs into the graphics daughterboard through a board-to-board connector and bolts on with brass standoffs.

Because the module is separate, you can swap it without touching the EEPROM or reprogramming anything. But a black screen on a Cayenne **doesn’t automatically mean a faulty LB048Q01**. In many cases the panel is fine and the fault is on the board, in the circuits that power and drive it. Check the board before you order a new screen.

### Typical Porsche Cayenne 958 cluster faults

- **Intermittent operation.** The cluster drops out, reboots or works only some of the time. Faults like this are hard to pin down in the car, and much easier to track down on the bench with a stable power supply.
- **Display problems.** The TFT goes black, flickers or shows artefacts. Our own sample has a dead screen, which shows how common this is. When a second unit like this comes in, we’ll repair it when we have a free moment and report back on what the cause was.
- **Missing backlight.** Dials or parts of the display stay dark. Look for cold solder joints on the PCB, or single LEDs that have burnt out unevenly while the rest still glow.
- **Corrupted EEPROM data.** This is often caused by a person. Someone connects a cheap tool, starts “experimenting”, and the 95640 contents end up damaged. The result can be wrong values, lost configuration or a cluster that won’t work properly. A backup of the original data is the best insurance here.

### Bench work: a partial start is enough for the 95640

On the bench, with **+12V and GND** connected, the Cayenne 958 cluster starts **only partially**. Keep one thing in mind: FORZA 614 does not send CAN-bus frames to this cluster at the moment. Even with the CAN lines connected, the software won’t wake it fully, so you won’t see every gauge and the full display come alive on the bench.

For EEPROM work, that doesn’t matter. Connect the cluster through the blue 32-pin dash plug, and FORZA 614 reads and writes the full 95640 with the cluster in that partial state. The same connection also lets you **test CAN-bus communication**, on the bench and in the car. That’s often the fastest way to tell whether you’re dealing with a communication problem or a board fault.

If you need to check every gauge, lamp and the TFT at full operation, do that in the car, where the cluster gets the vehicle’s full CAN-bus traffic.

### FORZA 614 software programming options for the Porsche Cayenne 958 dashboard

FORZA 614 connects to this cluster in two ways:

- **In the car via OBD2**, with the dash still in place.
- **On the bench via the dash plug**, the blue 32-pin connector on the back of the cluster.

From there you can:

- **Read and write the full 95640 EEPROM**, 1:1.
- **Program the mileage**: set it to 0 km, or to any higher or lower value.
- **Adapt the mileage after a cluster swap**: match a replacement unit’s odometer to the vehicle’s original value.

**The VIN and the cluster configuration live in the 95640**, together with the mileage. When you fit a donor cluster, the cleanest method is to copy the entire EEPROM from the old unit to the donor. The VIN, configuration and mileage all move across in one step.

> ℹ️ **Full diagnostic access to the 95640.** The complete 95640 EEPROM can be both read and written diagnostically, through OBD2 in the car or through the dash connector on the bench. You don’t need to desolder the chip or use a serial programmer for a full 1:1 clone to a donor. Always save a backup of the original data before you write anything.

> ⚖️ **Legal notice.** Mileage programming is meant for legitimate repair work. When a cluster is replaced, the odometer of the **replacement cluster** should be corrected to the vehicle’s original mileage, and that correction should be done by a specialist instrument cluster service. Reducing a vehicle’s real mileage to mislead a buyer is illegal.

### Porsche Cayenne 958 Dashboard Pinout

The main connector is the **blue 32-pin plug** on the back of the housing. The full **Porsche Cayenne 958 95640 instrument cluster pinout**, with power, ground and CAN-bus lines, is built into the FORZA 614 PC application. You have it right where you need it when connecting the dash on the bench.

### Porsche Panamera 970 - the same cluster platform

Everything above also applies to the **Porsche Panamera 970 instrument cluster**. The Panamera uses the same VDO/Continental platform, with five round gauges, the tachometer in the centre and a colour TFT in the right-hand pod. The Panamera unit has its own part numbers, typically starting with **970.641**, while the Cayenne uses **7P5.920**. The hardware, the 95640 EEPROM, the bench behaviour and the programming options in FORZA 614 are the same. So if a Panamera dash with an intermittent fault, a black screen or corrupted EEPROM lands on your bench, this article is your guide too.

Note that this applies to the first-generation Panamera 970 (2009–2016) only.
The second-generation Panamera 971 uses a different cluster design with two TFT displays and is not covered here.

### A Porsche job your workshop can price with confidence

Owners of Cayennes and Panameras know what the dealer charges for a new cluster and how long it takes to arrive. That makes these units a strong job for an independent workshop: diagnose the fault, repair the board, clone the 95640 or adapt a donor. The clusters also ship well, so mail-in repair work is realistic. Because full EEPROM read/write works diagnostically, you don’t have to desolder anything, and you can focus your bench time on the actual fault.

### One subscription, every new cluster included

FORZA 614 runs on one flat-rate subscription. There are no per-model licences and no token fees. New clusters, including this first Porsche, are added to your existing subscription as they’re released. That keeps your upfront cost low, and it funds continuous development, which is why new positions keep appearing in the menu.

## FAQ - Porsche Cayenne Instrument Cluster

#### ****Which EEPROM does the Porsche Cayenne 958 instrument cluster use?**

It uses an ST 95640 SPI serial EEPROM, located on the graphics daughterboard next to the Spansion S29GL064N flash.

#### ****Is the Panamera cluster the same as the Cayenne 958 cluster?**

Yes, the Panamera 970 uses the same VDO/Continental platform with the 95640 EEPROM. The part numbers differ (970.641.xxx vs 7P5.920.xxx), but the programming options in FORZA 614 are the same.

#### ****Can the full 95640 be read and written through OBD2?**

Yes. FORZA 614 reads and writes the complete 95640 diagnostically, through OBD2 in the car or through the 32-pin dash plug on the bench.

#### ****Is the VIN stored in the 95640?**

Yes. The VIN, the cluster configuration and the mileage are all stored in the 95640 EEPROM.

#### ****Will the cluster light up fully on the bench?**

No. With +12V and GND it starts only partially, and FORZA 614 doesn’t send CAN-bus frames to this cluster, even with the CAN lines connected. The partial start is enough to read and write the full 95640 through the dash plug. In a future we will probably add this option.

#### ****Can I install a used instrument cluster in a Cayenne 958, and does it need programming?**

Yes, but a used cluster carries the donor car’s VIN, configuration and mileage in its 95640 EEPROM. The cleanest fix is to copy the full 95640 contents from the original cluster to the replacement. FORZA 614 does this diagnostically via OBD2 or the dash plug. Make sure the replacement matches the original part number family (7P5.920.xxx for the Cayenne 958) before you start.
