## 2016-2017 Ford Transit dashboard technical guide

Hey everyone!
Today on the workbench we have a 2017 Ford Transit instrument cluster, part number **GK2T-10849-JB**, built around the NEC **D70F3525** microcontroller. At first glance it's a regular Ford van dash, but it has a few quirks. The label says it was made in Turkey and carries the Johnson Controls number **JCI P/N 3152497-08**. When you open the housing, though, the PCB is clearly marked **Visteon**.
So this one unit has a Ford part number, a JCI sticker and a Visteon board.

The layout is classic Transit: the tachometer on the left, the speedometer on the right, and fuel level and engine temperature gauges in the lower middle. Above those two small gauges sits a blue display connected by a ribbon cable. Below we'll go through what's inside, what usually fails, and how FORZA 614 powers up and programs this cluster through OBD2 or directly on the bench.

### What's inside the Ford Transit GK2T-10849-JB cluster

What really sets this Ford Transit dashboard apart is what's *missing* from it. Many Ford clusters of a similar design carry an external **95320** EEPROM. This one doesn't, and there's no 8-pin memory chip anywhere on the board. Mileage and configuration live in the emulated EEPROM, a data flash area inside the NEC processor. If you're used to the "find the 95320, read it, done" routine on other Fords, this unit changes the workflow.

- **Microcontroller**: NEC D70F3525 (V850 family). It handles gauge control, CAN-bus communication and the display, and it also stores mileage and configuration data in its emulated EEPROM.
- **External EEPROM**: none. There's no 95320 here, unlike many similar Ford clusters.
- **Stepper motors**: Sonceboz **6405R407**. The motors also carry the markings 17268K1W and 53349, but 6405R407 is the number that matters when you order replacements.
- **PCB / manufacturer**: Visteon board inside a Turkish-built unit labelled JCI P/N 3152497-08.

💡 **No 95320, so don't waste time looking for it.**
On this Ford Transit D70F3525 cluster, all mileage and configuration data is read from and written to the processor itself. There's no external chip to desolder or clip onto.

### VARITRONIX FPC-J0H1121\_Q-01 LCD Blue Display

The blue segment display sits above the fuel and temperature gauges and connects to the board with a ribbon (FPC) cable. Printed on it are the markings **VARITRONIX**, **FPC-J0H1121\_Q-01** and the date 2009.04.21.

That date caught our attention. The cluster's own label is dated **21/12/2017**, and the van really is a 2017 model. So the display design is about eight years older than the cluster it went into. Ford and its suppliers kept the same part in production for a long time. On the bench, the display is one of the first things we check, because ribbon and contrast problems are a regular reason these units come in for repair.

### Common Ford Transit cluster faults

These are the problems we see most often on this Ford Transit speedometer:

- **Display problems.** The blue Varitronix display can show missing segments, fade or go completely blank. The cause is often the ribbon connection rather than the glass itself.
- **Sticking or jumping needles.** Worn Sonceboz 6405R407 stepper motors make the gauges freeze, lag behind the real value or fail to return to zero.
- **Intermittent operation.** The cluster switches off and on, or works only when it feels like it. Most often this comes from cold solder joints on the PCB, which crack after years of vibration and temperature cycles in a working van.
- **No CAN-bus communication.** The cluster doesn't respond on the network, so the gauges and display stay dead even though power is present.

### Full instrument cluster wake-up on the bench

This Ford Transit cluster needs CAN-bus frames from the vehicle before it fully powers up. If you only connect power on the bench, you'll get a mostly dead unit. FORZA 614 sends the required CAN frames itself, so the cluster wakes up fully on the bench without a separate CAN generator.

This also works as a quick diagnostic check. When the dash comes alive with the needles sweeping and the blue display active, you've confirmed that CAN communication and the display both work before you start any programming.

### FORZA 614 software programming options for Ford Transit dashboard

With the cluster awake, FORZA 614 gives you these options:

- **Read and write the emulated EEPROM** from the NEC D70F3525, as a full backup and restore of the processor's data area.
- **Read and write any mileage value**, which is the key function when adapting a used replacement cluster to a van.

When you replace a damaged unit with a used one, the best approach is to read the full emulated EEPROM from the original cluster and write it to the donor. This transfers the mileage and the vehicle configuration in one step, so you don't have to set each value by hand.

**Both reading and writing of the emulated EEPROM work diagnostically**, either in the vehicle through OBD2 or on the bench using
the F1-F2 cables. You don't need to remove the processor or connect a separate programmer to the board.

### Ford Transit Instrument Cluster Pinout

As always, the full **Ford Transit D70F3525 dashboard pinout** is built into the FORZA 614 PC application. It shows exactly where to connect the F1-F2 cables for bench work, so you don't need to search forums for a wiring diagram.

### Why workshops take on Ford Transit cluster repairs

The Transit is one of the most common vans in Europe and works hard in fleets, which means a steady flow of clusters with dead displays, stuck needles or intermittent faults. A new unit from the dealer is expensive and still needs configuring. A bench repair plus an emulated EEPROM transfer is quicker and much cheaper for the customer. It also works well as a mail-in service: the customer sends only the cluster, and you send back a repaired unit with the original data in place.

### Subscription without token fees

FORZA 614 runs on a flat-rate yearly subscription. There are no token fees and no extra charges per car, and new programs are added every week. This Ford Transit program is another step towards our goal of making FORZA 614 the most user-friendly instrument cluster repair tool in the world: connect, wake the dash, read, write, done.

## **FAQ**

#### ****Does the 2017 Ford Transit GK2T-10849-JB cluster have an external EEPROM?**

No. Unlike many similar Ford clusters, it has no external 95320 EEPROM. All data is stored in the emulated EEPROM of the NEC D70F3525.

#### ****Do I need a CAN-bus generator to power up this cluster on the bench?**

No. FORZA 614 sends the required CAN frames itself, and the cluster wakes up fully with active gauges and display.

#### ****Can I program the mileage via OBD2?**

Yes. FORZA 614 reads and writes the mileage, and the full emulated EEPROM, through OBD2 in the vehicle or on the bench using the F1–F2 cables.

#### ****Is this a Visteon or a JCI cluster?**

Both names appear on it. The label carries JCI P/N 3152497-08, while the PCB inside is marked Visteon. The unit itself was made in Turkey.

#### ****Which stepper motors does the Ford Transit D70F3525 cluster use?**

It uses Sonceboz 6405R407 stepper motors.
