## Dash Plug and OBD2 FORZA 614 solution for Speedometer power up and calibration

Hey everyone! Today on the workbench we have a Ford E-350 instrument cluster - a 2021 unit, part number **LC2T-10849-CF**, which we bought from a US eBay seller purely to strip it down, map it out and get it into FORZA 614\. Nothing flashy about it: two needles, speedo and tach, and between them an 8-inch colour screen that does all the rest of the talking. Built by FoMoCo, and honestly one of those dashboards that quietly racks up 300,000 miles in a shuttle bus, an ambulance conversion or a box van and never asks for attention.

Here's what's on the board, what actually goes wrong with these, and what FORZA 614 can do with one.

### What's inside the E-350 dashboard

This is a clean, modern single-MCU design. One big Renesas chip runs the graphics, the needles and the CAN traffic; everything else on the board is there to feed it. There's no secondary processor to fight with, which makes this cluster a lot more pleasant to work on than the twin-MCU American dashes from the same era.

191255.204859.3 stepper motors used in FORD E350 instrument clusters

- **Main microcontroller**: R7F701408 240 MHz, with the display controller, sprite engine and stepper motor drivers all integrated on-die. It handles the 8-inch screen, both gauges and CAN-bus communication on its own.
- **EEPROM**: 93C86 a SOIC-8 Microwire device, just below the BGA. 16 Kbit. This is where the mileage, the VIN and the cluster configuration live.
- **NOR Flash**: FL256SSIF00 Spansion 256-Mbit serial NOR, in wide SOIC-16\. This holds the graphics and font assets that get pushed to the screen.
- **Stepper motors**: marked 191225.204907.6 only two of them, because only the speedometer and tachometer have physical needles on this cluster. Fuel, temperature and everything else are drawn on the LCD.

#### The same cluster also covers the E-450

Ford's service part for the 2021-2025 range, LC2Z-10849-B, is listed for both the **E-350 Super Duty** and the **E-450 Super Duty**. In practice that means everything in this article applies to E-450 cutaway and chassis-cab work as well - same board, same R7F701408, same 93C86, same programming procedure. For fleet shops that run mixed E-350 and E-450 rosters, it's one procedure to learn, not two.

### LQ080Y5DZ04 the 8-inch FORD cluster display

The screen in this cluster is a Sharp **LQ080Y5DZ04**, an 8-inch automotive TFT. It's the defining feature of this generation of the E-Series dash – it takes up the entire centre of the cluster and carries the odometer, trip data, gear indicator, fuel and temperature bars and all the warning graphics.

It also gives you a quick way to identify what you're looking at. The 8-inch panel is characteristic of the **2021 and 2022** model years; from 2023 Ford started fitting smaller displays in E-Series clusters, so if you're buying a donor sight-unseen, screen size is the first thing to check against the vehicle.

### Typical faults on the E-350 cluster

We'll be straight with you - this is a strong design and it doesn't have a signature failure mode the way some clusters do. Ford got this one largely right. But these vans do hundreds of thousands of miles, and electronics plus vibration plus heat eventually wins:

- **Power supply problems.** The most common thing you will see. Symptoms range from a dash that won't wake at all to intermittent resets while driving. Worth checking the supply rails and the connector solder joints and wiring harness.
- **Backlight LEDs around the stepper motors.** When these start going, you lose illumination on the tachometer or speedometer dial specifically, while the LCD stays perfectly bright. That split symptom - screen fine, one dial dark – is the giveaway, and it's a straightforward board-level repair rather than a cluster replacement.

### Waking a Ford E-350 cluster on the bench

Here's the thing that catches a lot of people out: **without CAN-bus frames this cluster will not start on the bench.** Power alone gets you nothing useful. Normally that means either putting it back in a van or building yourself a CAN generator.

FORZA 614 has the CAN frame signals built in. When you hit **Read Value** or **Identity** in the app, the cluster wakes up and lights up for a good dozen seconds or so - full screen, full illumination.

That turns out to be one of the most useful things about this whole setup, and not just for repair shops. If you sell used automotive parts, this is how you prove a cluster works before it ships. If you do vehicle conversions or re-bodies, this is how you confirm a donor dash is alive before you commit to installing it. No vehicle, no test harness, no separate CAN generator - just the cluster on the bench and the software.

### FORZA 614 software programming options for the Ford E-350 dashboard

With the cluster connected, FORZA 614 reads and writes:

- **Mileage** (miles)
- **Engine hours**
- **Idle engine hours**

That last pair matters more on this platform than on most. E-Series vans spend enormous amounts of time idling - ambulances on scene, shuttle buses at stops, utility bodies running equipment - and idle hours are what a lot of fleet maintenance schedules actually key off. Getting them right on a replacement cluster isn't cosmetic.

All three values are handled **diagnostically** – either through the OBD2 port with the cluster in the vehicle, or directly through the cluster connector on the bench using the **F1 + F2** cable combination. The pinout for the dash plug is in the PC application.

When you run a read, FORZA 614 also reports back the **VIN**, the **cluster part number** and the **cluster software version**. That's your donor verification done in one operation – you know immediately whether the unit in front of you matches what the seller claimed.

ℹ️ **Important - full EEPROM access.** The three values above are programmable diagnostically, but the **full 1:1 contents of the 93C86 cannot be read or written diagnostically on this cluster.** If you need a complete dump - for a backup, or to clone the original memory onto a donor unit - you'll need a serial EEPROM programmer connected directly to the 93C86 chip. Since the VIN is stored in that EEPROM alongside the mileage and configuration, a full chip-level copy is still the cleanest way to move a complete identity onto a donor cluster in one step.

### Ford E-350 Instrument Cluster Pinout

The **Ford E-350 dashboard pinout** is available directly inside the FORZA 614 application, so you don't need to go hunting through forum threads or guess at a connector. It covers the dash plug connection for the F1 + F2 cable setup, so you can work the cluster on the bench without an OBD2 connection to the vehicle.

### Why workshops repair these instead of replacing them

The business case on E-Series work is unusually good, because these are working vehicles and a working vehicle that's parked is losing money every day.

A dealer replacement cluster is expensive, frequently carries a core charge, and often has a lead time measured in weeks. Then it still needs programming before the van moves. Meanwhile a board-level repair - a backlight LED, a power supply issue, a mileage transfer onto a sound donor - is a fraction of that cost and can be turned around in a day.

That also makes E-Series clusters excellent mail-in repair work. The unit is easy to ship, the fault set is manageable, and the customer is usually a fleet operator or an upfitter with more than one van – meaning the first job you do well tends to bring the next five.

### The FORZA 614 subscription

FORZA 614 runs on a flat monthly subscription. No per-operation token fees, no individual vehicle licences, no paying again because you did three E-350s this week instead of one. You refresh the activation and you work.

## FAQ - FORD E350 & E450 Instrument Cluster

#### ****What EEPROM does a 2021 Ford E-350 instrument cluster use?**

The EEPROM in the 2021 Ford E-350 instrument cluster is a 93C86 in SOIC-8 package. It stores the mileage, VIN and cluster configuration.

#### ****What microcontroller is in the Ford E-350 cluster?**

The main MCU is a Renesas R7F701408 (RH850/D1M2), a 376-ball BGA device running at 240 MHz.

#### ****Do I need a CAN-bus generator to test an E-350 cluster on the bench?**

No. The cluster won't wake on power alone, but FORZA 614 supplies the CAN frames itself - clicking Read Value or Identity lights the cluster up for around fifteen seconds.

#### ****Can I read the full 93C86 contents through OBD2?**

No. Mileage, engine hours and idle engine hours are programmable diagnostically, but a full 1:1 EEPROM read or write requires a serial EEPROM programmer connected directly to the chip.

#### ****Does this cover the Ford E-450 as well?**

Yes. The same cluster hardware is used across E-350 and E-450 Super Duty models.

#### Will FORZA 614 solve a SAFE / component protection issue after a cluster swap?

Not currently - FORZA 614 handles EEPROM and mileage today. A one-click component-block copy is on the roadmap for the future.
